Behind The Dental Barns: The Thinking Behind Your Care
Discover the people, peaceful setting and thoughtful approach behind your care at The Dental Barns in Lichfield, as featured in Dental Business News.

Before you choose a dental practice, it is natural to want to know who is behind it. Who will listen to your concerns? How are decisions made? And will the experience feel right for you?
A recent Dental Business News interview with David Drew, published on 5 October 2026, offers a look behind the scenes at The Dental Barns. David is our co-founder and practice manager, working alongside Principal Dentist and co-founder Dr Keely Thorne.
The interview explores the thinking behind the practice. For you, that thinking comes down to something quite personal: how it feels to arrive, ask a question and make a decision about your care.
Two perspectives, one shared purpose
Keely leads the clinical care, bringing her attention to your dental health, the findings from your examination and the treatment options appropriate for you. David looks across the running of the practice, from the way appointments are organised to the experience surrounding them.
Those responsibilities complement each other. Good clinical care needs the time and support to happen properly. Equally, a welcoming environment needs to be backed by careful assessment, clear communication and a team that works well together.
Bringing both perspectives into our decisions helps us consider the whole visit. We want you to feel listened to throughout, including when you are asking practical questions about appointments, costs or what happens next.
A calmer place to arrive
Our setting at Blackbrook Barns, near Lichfield, was an opportunity to think carefully about the moments before an appointment begins.
Privacy, peaceful surroundings and easy parking can make arriving feel less demanding. If you already feel apprehensive about dentistry, having space to find your bearings matters. The setting cannot remove every worry, but it can help us offer a gentler welcome.
The converted barn also brings practical responsibilities. Behind the character of the building is work to make it comfortable and dependable for everyday care. We want you to notice the welcome and the surroundings, while the practical details quietly support your visit.
Time to see, understand and ask
Technology earns its place when it makes a conversation clearer. Our consultation technology, referred to as the “doc station” in the interview, supports the time we spend explaining findings and discussing treatment options.
Its purpose is to help you understand what we have found, what we are recommending and why. Equipment is only part of that process. You also need time to ask questions, consider the choices and tell us what matters to you.
Our Signature Assessment ✦ gives you 90 minutes with Dr Keely to discuss your concerns, assess your dental health and explore your options. It combines Smile Design, a comprehensive examination and clinically appropriate diagnostics. We discuss your itemised treatment plan and costs on the day, with a personalised written report afterwards.
£450 total, with a £225 deposit deducted from that total. Treatment is charged separately, with no obligation to proceed.
Joining VIP gives you access to a private booking link for your assessment.
People should have time for people
Some of the most useful improvements in a practice happen out of sight. A clearer process or a better way of handling repetitive administration may seem a small thing, but it can make a working day feel less fragmented.
As David puts it in the Dental Business News interview:
“I am a big believer that people should spend their time with people.”
That is the purpose behind our work on systems and automation. We want to reduce avoidable administrative demands so the team has more capacity to help you: answering a question, explaining a next step or supporting someone who feels nervous.
A system is useful when it supports that human contact. We judge improvements by how they help the team deliver a more considered experience, as well as how reliably they work behind the scenes.
A clearer idea of what to expect
You should not have to arrive knowing the names of treatments or having decided exactly what you need. You may have a particular concern, an idea about your smile, or simply questions you have been putting off.
Our guide to your first visit to The Dental Barns explains how we begin that conversation. If seeing examples helps you put your thoughts into words, you can also explore completed patient treatments in our Smile Gallery. Every mouth is different, so those examples are a starting point for discussion, rather than a promise of the same result.
Protecting what matters as we grow
As The Dental Barns develops, our commitment is to protect the quality of care and the patient experience. Progress should give us better ways to support you while preserving the attention that makes a visit feel personal.
The setting, the technology and the systems all serve that purpose. What matters is having a team that listens, explains and gives your decisions the care they deserve.
