The Invisalign VAT Change: Why Clear Aligner Prices Are Rising in September 2026

From 7 September 2026, Align Technology will add 20% UK VAT to applicable Invisalign® aligners and Vivera™ retainers following an Upper Tribunal ruling. David Drew explains what changed, why the full treatment fee is not rising by 20%, what remains unaffected, and how The Dental Barns has adjusted its clear aligner pricing.

Why Invisalign® Prices Are Changing in September 2026

If you have been looking at Invisalign® or clear aligner treatment in the UK, you may have seen headlines about a new 20% VAT charge. It sounds, at first glance, like the cost of Invisalign is about to jump by 20% overnight.

That is not what is happening.

From 7 September 2026, Align Technology has confirmed that its UK invoices will include 20% VAT on applicable Invisalign® aligners and Vivera™ retainers. The change follows a July 2026 Upper Tribunal ruling which decided that clear aligners do not qualify as “dental prostheses” for the specific VAT exemption being argued in the case.

This is a tax change on one part of the treatment journey — not a 20% increase in the value, time or clinical care involved in creating your smile.

At The Dental Barns, we wanted to explain exactly what has changed, what has not, and why our own clear aligner prices have moved by around 5–7% rather than 20%.

What Actually Happened?

The case was HM Revenue & Customs v Align Technology Switzerland GmbH and Align Technology BV.

In 2025, the First-tier Tribunal found in Align Technology's favour and decided that clear aligners could be treated as VAT-exempt dental prostheses. Following that ruling, Align stopped charging UK VAT on affected aligner products from 1 August 2025.

HMRC appealed.

On 7 July 2026, the Upper Tribunal overturned the earlier decision. Its conclusion was that the term “dental prostheses” in this part of VAT law means artificial items which replace missing or damaged teeth. Clear aligners move existing teeth; they do not replace them. The Tribunal therefore held that the aligners in the case were standard-rated for VAT.

Align has said it intends to appeal further, but it has also confirmed that it will comply with the current ruling. From 7 September 2026, applicable UK Invisalign® aligner and Vivera™ retainer invoices will include VAT at the standard 20% rate.

So Why Hasn't There Been VAT on Invisalign Before?

There are two slightly different answers, depending on whether you mean the manufacturer's invoice or the patient's treatment fee.

First, this is not a completely new tax invented in September 2026. Align had charged VAT historically. After winning the First-tier Tribunal case in 2025, it stopped charging VAT on the affected products from August 2025. The Upper Tribunal has now reversed that position.

Second, patients do not usually see a separate “VAT” line added to a dentist's Invisalign treatment fee. Dental care and treatment supplied by registered dental professionals can be VAT-exempt where the purpose is to protect, maintain or restore health. HMRC's own guidance also recognises that drugs and appliances supplied as an integral part of dental treatment can fall within that exempt healthcare supply.

The practical issue for a dental practice is therefore often input cost: the manufacturer or laboratory charges VAT to the practice on the relevant goods. For an exempt healthcare business, that VAT can become a real additional cost rather than something simply passed through and reclaimed in the normal way.

Does This Mean Invisalign Treatment Should Rise by 20%?

No.

The aligners themselves are only one part of a complete clear aligner service. A well-planned Invisalign journey is not a box of plastic trays handed over at reception.

At The Dental Barns, the fee reflects the entire clinical journey: diagnosis, planning, technology, professional time, monitoring, refinement, finishing and long-term retention. The 20% VAT is being applied to the relevant manufacturer supply, not to every hour of dentist and team time involved in your care.

That is why our own prices have not risen by 20%.

Our New Clear Aligner Prices

We have reviewed the additional supplier cost carefully and looked at what we need to charge to continue providing the level of clear aligner care we believe patients should expect.

  • Tier 1 — £4,195
  • Tier 2 — £5,295
  • Tier 3 — £6,395

Depending on the complexity tier, that represents an increase of approximately 5–7% on our previous fees.

We have deliberately absorbed part of the additional cost rather than simply applying a blanket 20% increase. At the same time, we have to keep the service sustainable: that means paying our team properly, protecting the clinical time required to plan and monitor cases, and continuing to invest in the technology and support that make the treatment predictable and personal.

What Happens If I Already Have a Quote?

If you already have a valid written quote from The Dental Barns at our previous clear aligner prices, we will honour it for its stated validity period. Where the new supplier VAT applies, we will absorb that additional cost rather than changing an agreed valid quote.

If you are already in active Invisalign® or clear aligner treatment with us, your agreed treatment fee is unaffected.

The new prices apply to new treatment plans going forward.

What Does Our Clear Aligner Package Actually Include?

This is the part that matters most to us, because the value of treatment is not determined by the number of trays in a box.

Our clear aligner treatment is designed as a complete smile journey and can include:

  • Clinician-led digital planning — your case is planned around your teeth, bite, facial balance and the result you want to achieve.
  • 3D scanning and digital smile assessment — precise records help us plan movements carefully and explain the proposed result clearly.
  • Expert case planning and your design approval — we want you to understand and approve the direction of treatment before we begin.
  • Guided Biofilm Therapy with Airflow® — helping begin treatment from a clean, healthy foundation.
  • Weekly DentalMonitoring® reviews — your progress can be checked remotely each week, allowing us to identify issues early and keep unnecessary visits to a minimum.
  • Fine detailing and refinements — if the first sequence of aligners does not deliver the agreed result, treatment does not simply stop because the first box has run out.
  • Premium Enlighten® Whitening — once the position of the teeth is right, we refine the colour as part of the final smile.
  • Three Vivera™ or TruGEN™ XR retainers — helping protect the result once active movement has finished.

Most importantly, we treat the end result rather than the appliance. Straight teeth are only part of the picture. We plan with natural aesthetics, function, bite stability and long-term health in mind.

Our aim is not simply to make teeth line up. It is to create a smile that looks natural, works properly and still feels like you.

Does the VAT Ruling Affect Other Clear Aligner Companies?

The Upper Tribunal case directly involved Align Technology Switzerland GmbH and Align Technology BV, the companies behind Invisalign®. Align has specifically confirmed the September VAT change for applicable Invisalign® aligners and Vivera™ retainers.

The legal reasoning may also be relevant to other suppliers of comparable removable clear aligner products, because the judgment is about what qualifies as a “dental prosthesis” under the VAT legislation. However, the Tribunal did not make a brand-by-brand ruling on every clear aligner company.

For example, the judgment did not directly decide the VAT position of Spark™, Angel Aligner or every other aligner manufacturer. Each supplier is responsible for applying the correct VAT treatment to its own supplies, so we would not pretend that one court case automatically answers the commercial implementation for every brand.

What About Traditional Braces, Wires and Brackets?

This particular ruling was about clear aligners. It was not a ruling on fixed braces, orthodontic wires or brackets.

Many orthodontic components such as brackets and wires are already supplied to dental practices with standard-rate VAT by dental suppliers. That does not mean a patient's entire orthodontic treatment suddenly becomes subject to a new 20% tax. The professional treatment delivered by the dentist or orthodontist remains a separate VAT question and can remain exempt where it meets the healthcare exemption rules.

So, there is no new “7 September tax” being introduced specifically on fixed braces as a result of this Invisalign judgment.

Are Composite Bonding and Veneers Affected?

No change has been made to our composite bonding or veneer prices as a result of this ruling.

The Upper Tribunal decision concerns the VAT classification of clear aligners supplied by Align Technology. It does not create a general 20% VAT increase across cosmetic dentistry.

Our composite bonding and porcelain veneer fees are therefore unchanged for now.

Our View at The Dental Barns

We do not think the right response to this change is to hide it inside a price list and hope nobody notices.

Patients deserve to understand why a fee has changed.

We have assessed the new cost carefully and made what we believe is a fair adjustment: enough to allow us to continue delivering one of the most comprehensive clear aligner services in Staffordshire, while absorbing a meaningful portion of the increase ourselves.

We also want to protect what makes the service valuable. We are not interested in stripping out hygiene, reducing monitoring, limiting refinement or downgrading retention simply to preserve an old headline price.

Our focus remains the same: careful planning, close support and a natural end result.

If you are considering treatment, your tier is agreed up-front based on the complexity we expect your case to require. Once agreed, that tier is fixed: if the treatment proves more involved than expected, that is our responsibility, not yours.
