We use only genuine EMS Airflow® equipment and consumables — nothing else. It’s the gold standard in dental hygiene, and we won’t settle for anything less. This ensures every clean is as safe, effective, and comfortable as possible.
Assess, Disclose & Understand
We begin by assessing your gum health and using biofilm disclosure and intraoral imaging to show exactly where plaque is accumulating and which areas matter most to your wider care.
Clean Thoroughly
Using EMS Airflow®, we carry out Guided Biofilm Therapy across 45 calm, focused minutes, with targeted instrumentation added where clinically required rather than cleaning every area in exactly the same way.
Support the Treatment Plan
Hygiene is often part of a wider cosmetic or restorative plan. Before treatment we may focus on stabilising inflammation and preparing the gums; during treatment we work carefully around aligner attachments, temporary restorations, healing areas and delicate dentistry; afterwards the focus shifts to protecting the finished result.
You will leave with a tailored plan for brushing, interdental cleaning and the products or techniques most useful for your own mouth. Professional hygiene works best as support for excellent home care, not as a substitute for it.
Your maintenance interval is based on risk. Many stable patients are reviewed at least every six months, while gum disease, clear aligners or complex restorative work may mean considerably shorter intervals.
If you are undergoing cosmetic or restorative treatment with us, the hygiene team works alongside the wider clinical plan so cleaning is adapted around the dentistry you are having.
Can I book hygiene directly as a new patient?
Not currently. We are prioritising hygiene capacity for patients who are undergoing or maintaining cosmetic and restorative treatment with us. This is a capacity decision and Direct Access may reopen in the future as availability develops.
Do I need hygiene before cosmetic or restorative treatment?
Not automatically. If you arrive with healthy, stable gums and excellent plaque control, there is no reason to add an unnecessary appointment. We do, however, set a high health threshold for treatment, and active inflammation or poor plaque control may need to be addressed first.
How often should I have hygiene appointments?
Your interval is based on individual risk. Many stable patients are reviewed at least every six months, while gum disease, complex restorative work or clear aligner treatment can mean shorter intervals.
Will Airflow® hurt or make my teeth sensitive?
Most patients find warm-water Airflow® considerably more comfortable than a traditional scrape-and-polish approach. If you have sensitive or inflamed areas, we adapt the pace and technique rather than rushing through them.

Pricing is presented clearly so you can understand what is included, while more extensive periodontal treatment is planned and costed separately where needed. Hygiene capacity is currently prioritised for patients undergoing or maintaining cosmetic and restorative treatment at The Dental Barns.
Periodontal therapy is designed for patients showing signs of active gum disease, including inflammation, bleeding, deeper gum pockets and areas of plaque or calculus beneath the gum line.
At The Dental Barns, treatment is carefully tailored to the extent of disease rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach. We begin by identifying the areas that need attention, using detailed periodontal assessment, biofilm disclosure and intraoral imaging to help you clearly understand what is happening and where treatment needs to be focused.
Your gums and tooth surfaces are then meticulously cleaned above and below the gum line, with particular attention given to deeper periodontal pockets and areas of active inflammation. Just as importantly, we work with you on a personalised home-care routine to help control the causes of periodontal disease and support healthier gums long-term.
Treatment is divided into two tiers according to the extent and complexity of periodontal care required. Tier 1 is generally suitable where disease is more localised, with fewer affected sites, and can usually be managed within a single treatment session. Tier 2 is designed for more generalised disease, where there are more affected sites, deeper periodontal pockets or greater levels of inflammation and additional treatment time may be required.

We've chosen Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT) with Airflow® as our exclusive hygiene option, as it provides the most thorough, yet most gentle clean available in the UK. This advanced system ensures optimal results, removing biofilm and stains while prioritising comfort and care for your teeth and gums.
Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT) is a gentle, advanced method using air, water, and powder to remove plaque and bacteria. A coloured liquid highlights biofilm, then the Airflow® system gently clears plaque, stains, and tartar. For areas under the gum line, a special nozzle removes plaque and calculus.
Unlike traditional "scale and polish" treatments, GBT is more comfortable and thorough. It’s even recommended before tooth whitening for better results. Regular hygiene visits with Airflow® help keep biofilm, or plaque, in check, which also protects against wider health issues like heart disease and diabetes. Our Airflow Hygiene® Therapy includes:

Direct Access hygiene is not currently available to new standalone hygiene patients. Capacity is prioritised for patients undergoing or maintaining care with The Dental Barns. Where a Direct Access appointment is available, a dentist referral is not required.

Yes, we kindly ask for a 50% deposit when booking treatments. This allows us to prepare materials in advance and dedicate the appropriate time and space within the practice just for you.
We completely understand that life happens, and sometimes plans need to change. If you’re unwell or something unexpected comes up, just let us know as soon as you can. We kindly ask for at least 48 hours’ notice where possible, as this time is reserved exclusively for you. If less notice is given, we may not be able to refund your deposit—but we’ll always do our best to be fair.
We’ll always be clear about how much time to set aside. Our appointments are carefully planned with a little more time than usual, so we can go at your pace. We simply ask that you arrive 5–10 minutes before your scheduled time to settle in.
