Advanced Dental Hygiene in Lichfield
Healthy gums and a clean, stable mouth are fundamental to predictable cosmetic and restorative dentistry. At The Dental Barns, hygiene is treated as an important clinical stage in its own right, with generous appointment times, EMS Airflow® technology and a meticulous approach designed to support treatment, reduce future risk and protect the dentistry you invest in.

A Signature Clean With a Clinical Purpose
Our Signature Clean goes far beyond simply making your teeth feel polished. We use Guided Biofilm Therapy to identify and remove the biofilm that contributes to gum disease, decay and inflammation, while helping you understand exactly where future problems may develop. For patients undergoing cosmetic or restorative treatment, that means healthier foundations before treatment begins, better support while treatment is underway and a cleaner, more stable environment for maintaining the finished result.
Every Signature Clean at The Dental Barns uses the latest EMS Airflow® technology and follows the Guided Biofilm Therapy protocol. Plaque is disclosed so we can see exactly where biofilm is accumulating, then targeted systematically rather than cleaning by feel alone. Using our 55-inch 4K screens, we can show you what we are seeing and explain why particular areas matter to your wider treatment plan.
Your hygiene care is tailored to your mouth and the dentistry you are having. That may mean preparing the gums before cosmetic treatment, stabilising inflammation before restorative work, protecting areas around Invisalign® attachments or restorations, or creating a maintenance interval around your individual risk. We also adapt the appointment around comfort, sensitivity and anxiety, with time to pause whenever you need.
Long-term results depend on what happens between treatment appointments as much as what happens in the surgery. We combine professional biofilm removal with personalised home-care guidance, helping you maintain healthy gums, protect natural tooth structure and look after composite, porcelain and other restorative work. The calm environment, warm-water Airflow® and unhurried appointment design make that important maintenance considerably easier to keep up with.
Hygiene care at The Dental Barns is currently prioritised for patients undergoing or maintaining cosmetic and restorative treatment with us.
For that reason, Direct Access hygiene appointments are not currently available to new standalone hygiene patients. This may change as capacity develops, but for now we are protecting appointment availability for patients whose hygiene care forms part of an active or ongoing treatment plan.
If you are considering cosmetic or restorative care with us, your hygiene needs will be assessed as part of the wider journey and incorporated where appropriate. You can begin with Smile Design, or choose Fast Track ✦ if you are ready to combine your consultation, comprehensive examination and diagnostics in one focused appointment.
Location for calm
Your experience starts before you even step inside. We're tucked away in a peaceful countryside setting with easy free parking and no city stress. From the moment you arrive, the atmosphere feels calm, quiet, and welcoming.
Come in, take a breath, and make yourself at home. Enjoy a warm drink or something chilled, a handmade macaron, and soft seating in our lounge-style waiting area. No harsh lights, no loud noises, just space to relax.

Let's Talk, Not Rush
We take time to understand where you are in your wider dental journey. That may be preparing for cosmetic treatment, stabilising gum health before restorative care, maintaining work that has already been completed or simply reducing future disease risk. Your hygiene priorities are then built around the health of your mouth and the treatment you are having.

See Everything Clearly
We use disclosing solution and high-quality intraoral imaging to make biofilm visible, then show those areas clearly on our 55-inch 4K screens. This means the appointment is not just about removing plaque today; it helps identify where inflammation, decay risk or maintenance problems could affect your natural teeth or the dentistry being planned.

Thorough. Gentle. Exceptional.
Using the latest EMS Airflow® system, we remove biofilm and surface staining with a controlled stream of warm water and ultra-fine powder, followed by targeted instrumentation where clinically required. The process is systematic, precise and designed to be considerably more comfortable than a traditional scrape-and-polish approach while still delivering the thorough cleaning your treatment plan depends on.

Leave Informed, Leave Refreshed
Before you leave, we review what we found, show you the areas that have improved and agree the home-care and maintenance priorities that matter most. Where hygiene forms part of a larger cosmetic or restorative plan, those findings can be carried forward into the next stage of care so the team is working from the same clinical picture.

How hygiene fits into your treatment plan
Hygiene appointments are currently prioritised for patients undergoing or maintaining cosmetic and restorative treatment at The Dental Barns. Direct Access hygiene is not currently available to new standalone hygiene patients, although availability may change in the future as capacity develops.

Dental Hygiene FAQs
From Airflow® pricing and gum treatment to flossing, mouthwash, Invisalign® care, Direct Access and why we reserve 45 minutes for every appointment, here are the questions patients most often ask about hygiene at The Dental Barns.
If there are signs of active gum disease, a standard hygiene appointment may not be enough.
Bleeding, deeper gum pockets, persistent inflammation or deposits below the gum line can mean you need a more comprehensive periodontal assessment and treatment plan. Our Periodontal Therapy currently starts from £495, with a higher tier of £695 where disease is more widespread or additional treatment time is needed.
The goal is not simply to clean harder. It is to diagnose the extent of the problem, treat the affected areas systematically and then create a maintenance plan that helps keep the gums stable afterwards.
Our standard 45-minute Airflow® Hygiene Therapy appointment is £195.
That appointment is designed around Guided Biofilm Therapy rather than a short scale and polish. It includes biofilm disclosure, EMS Airflow®, targeted cleaning where clinically required, intraoral imaging, personalised home-care guidance and the time needed to tailor the session properly to your mouth.
If we identify active gum disease that needs more comprehensive treatment, Periodontal Therapy is priced separately from £495, with more extensive treatment currently £695. We explain which level of care is appropriate before treatment begins.
Direct Access hygiene is not currently available to new standalone hygiene patients at The Dental Barns.
At the moment, we are prioritising hygiene capacity for patients who are undergoing or maintaining cosmetic and restorative treatment with us. This allows us to protect the appointment time needed to support those active treatment plans properly.
This is a capacity decision rather than a permanent change in our philosophy, so Direct Access may reopen in the future as availability develops.
We work around the treatment plan rather than treating hygiene as a completely separate service.
Before treatment, we may focus on stabilising inflammation and preparing the gums and tooth surfaces so restorative or cosmetic work starts in the healthiest environment possible. During treatment, we adapt around temporary work, attachments, healing tissues or delicate areas and focus more closely on places that have become difficult to maintain.
After treatment, the emphasis shifts towards protecting the result. That may include cleaning carefully around composite, porcelain, crowns, implants or other restorations and tailoring the home-care plan so the dentistry remains healthy and maintainable long term.
Do not worry. We start with where you are now rather than assuming you should already know what to do.
We look at your gums and plaque levels, use disclosure to make biofilm visible and explain what we can see before beginning. If there is a lot to address, we do not need to attack everything aggressively in one go. The first priority is to understand the condition of the mouth, clean safely and build a routine you can realistically maintain.
If the findings suggest gum disease that needs more comprehensive periodontal treatment, we will explain that clearly and build the next stage around you.
Far more than simply polish teeth.
Within their training, competence and professional scope, hygienists and dental therapists can assess and monitor gum health, diagnose and plan care within their scope, provide periodontal treatment, remove biofilm and deposits above and below the gum line, take and interpret appropriate clinical information, give tailored preventive advice and help manage risk around implants and restorative dentistry.
Prevention is a major part of the role. Where clinically appropriate and within the clinician's competence, that can also include preventive interventions for early enamel disease. At The Dental Barns, this may include supporting the management of selected early lesions with Curodont™ Repair as part of a wider prevention plan.
It can make the teeth look noticeably brighter by removing external staining and biofilm.
Airflow® is particularly effective at lifting surface stains from things such as tea, coffee and other strongly coloured foods and drinks. What it does not do is chemically whiten the natural colour inside the tooth in the way professional tooth whitening does.
For many patients, a thorough hygiene appointment is an excellent first step because it shows the true clean baseline before deciding whether whitening is needed.
Yes. There is free private parking on site at Blackbrook Barns, close to the practice entrance.
