Nervous Patient Care FAQs

From stopping treatment and getting properly numb to dental sounds, claustrophobia, root canal treatment, distraction, privacy and parking, here are the questions nervous patients most often ask before visiting The Dental Barns.

Investment
Can I join Denplan at The Dental Barns as a new patient?

Yes, but Denplan is not a way to join The Dental Barns directly from the outset.

New patients first need to complete our assessment and treatment-planning process so we properly understand their dental health, existing dentistry and long-term needs. For patients ready to do this in one comprehensive first visit, Fast Track ✦ is currently £450 and combines Smile Design, a comprehensive new-patient examination and the clinically appropriate diagnostics required for your case.

If treatment is identified, the clinically necessary stages required to bring your mouth to a healthy, stable and maintainable position need to be completed before we move you into long-term maintenance care.

Denplan is therefore available for suitable patients who have completed their initial assessment, followed the agreed treatment plan needed for stability and are ready to enter ongoing care with us. It is not available as a standalone subscription for someone who has not yet been assessed by The Dental Barns.

Can my treatment be phased around my anxiety and budget?

Often, yes. A complete treatment plan does not mean every stage has to happen at once.

We first identify anything urgent or unstable, then look at what can safely be completed in stages. That allows us to consider both what feels manageable emotionally and how you would prefer to spread the financial commitment.

The important part is planning the whole mouth from the beginning, so treatment completed today still makes sense alongside the stages you may choose to complete later.

Will being a nervous patient make my dental treatment more expensive?

There is no automatic nervous-patient surcharge simply because you are anxious.

Your fees are based on the treatment you need, the clinical time required and the way your appointments need to be structured. For some patients, longer appointments or completing treatment in smaller stages may be the best way forward. If that changes the cost, we explain it before treatment is booked.

The aim is transparency. You should understand both the clinical plan and the investment without worrying that asking for more time, explanation or support will produce an unexpected bill.

Do you offer finance for larger treatments?

Yes. We offer finance options including up to 12 months interest-free finance for eligible treatments, subject to status and lender criteria.

You receive your personalised treatment plan and costs first, so you can understand the full investment before deciding whether to pay outright or explore an available finance option.

For larger or staged treatment plans, this can make it easier to plan the financial side alongside the clinical sequence without feeling pressured to make a decision during the appointment.

Treatment procedure & process
I’m healthy and just want regular dental care. Can I join The Dental Barns?

Yes. You do not need to be planning cosmetic treatment to become a long-term patient at The Dental Barns.

For new patients who want us to look after their dental health long term, Fast Track ✦ is the appropriate first appointment, currently £450. It gives us the time and diagnostic information needed to understand your teeth, gums, bite, existing dentistry, risks and long-term maintenance needs properly rather than simply carrying out a quick check-up.

If your mouth is already healthy and stable, your plan may be very simple and focused mainly on prevention and ongoing maintenance. If we identify active disease, failing dentistry or another problem that needs attention, we will explain the treatment required to bring your mouth to a stable, maintainable position.

Continued Care is offered once that initial assessment has been completed and any clinically necessary treatment needed for long-term stability has been addressed. This means our ongoing care is built around a mouth we understand properly and a plan that has been followed, rather than accepting new patients directly into routine recall appointments without first establishing their dental health.

Can I arrive early or relax after my appointment?

Yes. You do not have to treat the appointment like something to rush into and immediately escape from.

Our lounge is there for you to settle before your appointment, have a drink and give yourself time to adjust to the environment. If you need a few minutes afterwards before leaving, that is completely fine too.

For many nervous patients, removing the feeling of being hurried before and after treatment makes the clinical part of the visit much easier to manage.

What if dental smells, sounds or the clinical environment make me anxious?

That is exactly why the environment at The Dental Barns was designed differently.

Our lounge and treatment spaces use soft lighting, subtle scent and a deliberately non-clinical feel. During treatment, noise-cancelling headphones, music, films or your own audio can reduce how much attention you give to dental sounds.

If there is a particular smell, sound or sensation that triggers you, tell us. The more specific we can be about the trigger, the more effectively we can adapt the appointment around it.

How do you help me feel in control during a dental appointment?

Control starts with knowing what is happening.

We explain the appointment before we begin, agree how you want us to communicate, use a stop signal and show you photographs, scans or X-rays where that helps you understand why treatment is being recommended.

Your preferences and important anxiety triggers can be documented so the team does not expect you to explain everything again at every visit. Good records, clear consent and consistent communication help make each appointment safer and more predictable.

Can you help stop small problems becoming fillings?

Where possible, yes. Prevention is particularly valuable for nervous patients because avoiding a future invasive procedure is better than simply trying to make that procedure less stressful.

We look for early enamel changes, gum problems, areas of plaque retention and other risks before they become larger problems. Where clinically suitable, Curodont™ Repair can be used for selected early enamel lesions to support remineralisation without traditional drilling or a filling.

Regular monitoring, hygiene care and personalised home-care advice can also reduce the chance of small problems progressing.

What if I feel claustrophobic during dental treatment?

Tell us what specifically makes you feel enclosed, because claustrophobia can be triggered by different things for different people.

We can adapt the chair position where the procedure allows, build in breaks, use efficient suction to reduce the feeling of water collecting in the mouth and keep you informed before anything is placed or changed.

Some treatments do not require a rubber dam. Where a rubber dam is clinically important, particularly during root canal treatment, we will explain why it is needed and work with you to make the experience as manageable as possible rather than surprising you with it.

Can I bring someone with me if I am nervous?

Yes. If having someone you trust with you makes the appointment feel easier, please tell us.

Where it is safe and practical for the stage of treatment, a friend, partner or family member can help you settle in and be part of the conversation. For some clinical procedures we may need to manage where they sit or whether they remain in the surgery, but we will explain that clearly rather than simply separating you without warning.

The important thing is that your support person helps you feel calmer and more confident.

What can I use to distract myself during treatment?

Whatever helps you switch your attention away from the dentistry.

We can provide noise-cancelling headphones and you can watch a film, series or other content on our screens, listen to music or use Spotify. If you prefer your own audio, you are welcome to bring your own device and headphones.

Some patients prefer conversation, some want complete distraction and others would rather have a quieter appointment. We adapt around what makes treatment easier for you.

Can I ask you to stop or pause during treatment?

Yes. You are always allowed to pause.

Before treatment starts, we agree a simple hand signal so you can tell us immediately if you want us to stop. We can then sit you up, give you a break, explain what is happening or simply give you a moment before deciding whether to continue.

You do not need to wait until something feels unbearable. If you feel uncomfortable, overwhelmed or just need a pause, use the signal. Staying in control is a core part of how we care for nervous patients.

Results & Appearance
Will needing shorter or staged appointments compromise my final result?

Not simply because treatment is staged.

The important thing is that the final result is planned from the beginning. If you are more comfortable completing care in smaller steps, we can often sequence those stages so each one moves towards the same overall restorative or cosmetic goal.

Some procedures still need a particular amount of uninterrupted clinical time to be carried out safely and predictably. Where that applies, we explain why and work with you to make that appointment as manageable as possible rather than compromising the dentistry.

Can I still improve my smile if dental anxiety has stopped me for years?

Yes. Being nervous does not mean your only option is basic or emergency dentistry.

For some patients, the first priority is rebuilding health and stability after treatment has been delayed. Once those foundations are under control, cosmetic options such as whitening, Invisalign®, composite bonding or porcelain may still form part of the longer-term plan where they are appropriate.

We can build the journey in stages, with the same attention to the final appearance as we would for any other patient. Anxiety changes how we deliver the care, not the standard of result we aim for.

Can restorative treatment improve both function and appearance?

Very often, yes. Restorative dentistry is primarily about rebuilding health, strength and function, but those same changes can also improve appearance.

Repairing worn edges can restore tooth length. Replacing a failing crown can improve shape and colour. Rebuilding damaged back teeth can improve the bite and support the front teeth more effectively. Replacing missing teeth can restore both chewing function and the balance of the smile.

We plan those outcomes together rather than treating function and appearance as completely separate goals. The result should work properly first, while looking as natural and considered as possible.

Will restorative dentistry look natural?

That is the aim. In most restorative cases, the best result is one that does not draw attention to the dentistry at all.

We carefully consider tooth shape, surface texture, translucency, shade, neighbouring teeth and the way the restoration meets the gum. Whether we are placing a composite restoration, porcelain onlay or crown, the goal is to recreate the natural anatomy of the tooth rather than make it look obviously restored.

If you do want a brighter or more noticeable cosmetic change, that can be discussed as part of the wider plan. The important point is that the appearance should be intentional, not an accidental giveaway that dental work has been carried out.

What if I do not want very white or perfectly uniform teeth?

That is completely compatible with our approach. A beautiful smile does not need to be extremely white, perfectly symmetrical or stripped of every natural detail.

We can discuss how bright you would like the smile to feel, how much character you want to retain and the shapes or features you particularly like about your existing teeth. Natural variation in translucency, texture, line angles and proportions can be deliberately preserved or recreated.

Your preferences are part of the design process, with Dr Keely guiding you on what will sit most naturally with your face and existing smile.

Location & Ease
Is The Dental Barns private and discreet for nervous patients?

Yes. The Dental Barns is set away from a busy high street at Blackbrook Barns, which gives the practice a naturally quieter and more discreet feel.

Patients are not arriving into a crowded city-centre clinic, and the setting allows a more private, unhurried experience before and after treatment. If discretion is particularly important to you, tell us when arranging your visit so we can understand what you need.

Is there free parking at your Lichfield dental practice?

Yes. There is free private parking on site at Blackbrook Barns, close to the practice entrance.

Our location page includes more information about visiting The Dental Barns. For many patients, avoiding city-centre traffic and parking is part of what makes the experience feel more relaxed from the moment they arrive.

Why Choose Our Specialist Destination?

1. A Sanctuary Away from the High Street

While most practices are tucked away in busy town centres, The Dental Barns is set within the tranquil beauty of Blackbrook Farm. Surrounded by open fields and historic farm buildings, our practice offers a peaceful, rural sanctuary that immediately lowers your heart rate. Forget the clinical, sterile atmosphere of the city; here, you can prepare for your Smile Design journey in a calm environment that feels more like a retreat than a dentist’s office.

2. Total Privacy and Absolute Discretion

Luxury dentistry requires a level of focus and privacy that high-street clinics often struggle to provide. Our location is deliberately secluded, ensuring your visits remain entirely confidential. There is no "window shopping" or crowded waiting rooms; instead, you enjoy a private, bespoke experience from the moment you turn off the main road.

3. Stress-Free Arrival with Ample Free Parking

The biggest hurdle of a city-centre appointment is the arrival. We have eliminated that stress entirely with ample, private on-site parking just steps from our door. Whether you are driving the 11-12 minutes from Sutton Coldfield or Tamworth, your commute is direct and your parking is guaranteed. You can arrive with time to breathe, enjoy the view of the brook, and step into your appointment feeling refreshed and ready for your transformation.
